BENCH PRESS ON BARBELL VS BENCH PRESS WITH DUMBBELLS

Abstract

Here we want to explain some of the differences between the barbell bench press and the dumbbell bench press.

Barbell bench press

In the case of the barbell bench press, a greater volume of weight is usually loaded. This is due to the fact that, thanks to the barbell, greater stability can be achieved. Likewise, it must be said that the movement of the barbell is easier for the same reason. It is not necessary so much coordination between our arms to be able to perform it. In it the movement is done simultaneously. It is therefore suitable for people who have little experience in this or other types of exercises, although it should always be performed under professional supervision.

Dumbbell bench press

In the case of the bench press with dumbbells, the two arms work independently. That is why it requires greater coordination and at the same time achieves a more homogeneous development of all our muscles. It must also be said that doing the bench press with dumbbells achieves a greater range of motion. The reason is that with the dumbbells we can descend more than with the barbell. At the same time we can make an eccentric movement, impossible to perform with the barbell. This applies not only when descending with the weight (with the barbell we collide with the chest) but also in the deadlift, with the dumbbell bench press we can choose the angle of closing our arms when completing the exercise, while with the barbell the hands are always in the same position.
