Mindfulness in sport?

Abstract

Mindfulness has been integrated into sport as a valuable tool to improve athletic performance and the well-being of athletes.

Mindfulness, or full attention, is the practice of being consciously present in the current moment, observing our thoughts, emotions, and surroundings without judgment.
Its roots are in Buddhist traditions, but in recent decades it has been adopted in psychological and wellness contexts in the West. It is often practiced through guided meditations, breathing exercises, and everyday activities, such as eating or walking, paying full attention to each action.
The benefits of mindfulness may include reduced stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as improved concentration, emotional regulation, and overall well-being.
Mindfulness and sport
This relationship is increasingly recognized for its benefits on athletic performance and the well-being of athletes. Among its advantages are:

1. Greater concentration: Helps athletes focus on the present, reducing distractions.
2. Better stress and anxiety management: Facilitates pressure management by accepting and observing thoughts and emotions without judging them.
3. Increased mental resilience: Strengthens the ability to recover from setbacks, maintaining motivation.
4. Greater mind-body connection: Promotes body awareness, improving technique and posture and helping to prevent injuries.
5. Pre-competition rituals: Many athletes use mindfulness practices to mentally prepare before competing.
6. Recovery and regeneration: Facilitates mental and emotional recovery after exercise.
Mindfulness, it seems, is becoming a valuable tool to improve performance and promote a healthy approach to sport.
